Introducing the Buccal Massage, the Internal Facial Massage
What do Meghan Markle, Kristen Bell, and J. Lo all have in common? They’ve all been sold on the benefits of a buccal massage. In fact, Meghan Markle swears by it. But what exactly is a buccal massage? What benefits does it have? And is it really an “internal” massage?
Okay, What Is a Buccal Massage?
A buccal massage focuses on the mouth and jaw, and it rubs the muscles from both the inside and outside of your mouth. And anyone who’s done a buccal massage will admit that they look a little odd. For example, see here or here. A technician’s fingers will go in your mouth and massage your cheeks from both sides. Note that your gums and teeth aren’t part of the massage—it’s all about stimulating the lymphatic system and hitting tension points in the jaw muscles that you wouldn’t be able to with a purely exterior facial massage – lymphatic drainage at its best!
But . . . It’s Weird, Right?
That’s the first reaction a lot of people have to an internal massage. It does look weird. But the same people who call it weird but still try a buccal massage end up swearing by it. A smoother face with fewer lines and noticeable lift does tend to convince a skeptical mind.
Why Should You Get a Buccal Massage?
For one thing, a buccal massage can help you relieve jaw tension and provide stress relief. If you’re stressed, you might carry a lot of tension in the jaw. It can also help alleviate headaches and migraines. And then there are the aesthetics. A buccal massage will contour and sculpt your face, reduce lines and wrinkles around your jaw, reduce the appearance of jowls, de-puff the skin, and stimulate the lymphatic system around the jaw area.
For those suffering with TMJ, buccal has been shown to reduce symptoms by releasing attachment points along the jaw. With this decrease in tension, muscle spasms and pain are removed, and the jaw begins to relax and move more easily. Many people are finding some good relief from this technique, and anyone suffering from TMJ knows how hard some days can be living with ongoing pain.
So, the short answer is that a buccal massage has a range of benefits for appearance but also most importantly for your health.
Is That All There Is to It?
Nope. The buccal massage is a part of a whole buccal facial.
A comprehensive facial that incorporates deep lifting massage, lymphatic renewal and cooling mask. Instills deep relaxation and rejuvenation to tired, sore muscles in the face; to achieve lymphatic drainage; to sculpt and refine the muscles and alleviate signs of aging, and stimulate tightening of the muscles to provide a lifting of the jaw, masseter and cheeks; and finally, a fulling around the mouth and lips.
For best results, we recommend a course of six treatments spread out biweekly, and then after that you can go longer periods for that sculpted-look maintenance. However, if you are a TMJ sufferer and you react positively to these sessions and they provide relief, you may want to keep these going frequently based on how you feel.
